TLDR: Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA) in Kulon Progo opened in 2020 and now handles all jet flights. The older Adisutjipto Airport (JOG) handles propeller and military traffic only. YIA sits 45 km from central Yogyakarta and connects via the YIA Airport Train (40 minutes, 50,000 IDR), DAMRI bus (60,000 to 70,000 IDR), or taxi (350,000 IDR). In the city, Grab and Gojek motorbikes cost 10,000 to 25,000 IDR per ride.

Take the YIA Airport Train rather than a taxi from Yogyakarta International. It runs every 60 to 90 minutes from Tugu Station, takes 40 minutes, costs 50,000 IDR, and is air-conditioned. Add a quick Grab from Tugu Station to your hotel for 15,000 to 25,000 IDR.
This guide to getting to yogyakarta airport and transport guide is built from years of hosting travelers at Tulips Hotel Yogyakarta and walking the Kraton, Borobudur, and the southern beaches with guests. Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA)
Yogyakarta International Airport opened in March 2020 in Kulon Progo regency, 45 km southwest of central Yogyakarta. The new airport replaced the runway-limited Adisutjipto for all jet operations and now handles flights from Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, Denpasar, and several Chinese cities. The terminal is modern, with a single long concourse, multiple food courts, and currency exchange counters.
Domestic carriers Garuda Indonesia, Citilink, Lion Air, Batik Air, and Super Air Jet all serve YIA. International routes are operated by AirAsia, Scoot, and seasonal services from China Southern. The Jakarta to Yogyakarta hop runs 70 minutes and costs 700,000 to 1,800,000 IDR depending on the day.
Arrivals halls are clearly signed in English and Indonesian. SIM card kiosks (Telkomsel and XL) sell tourist data plans for 100,000 to 250,000 IDR with 10 to 35 GB. ATMs are plentiful and accept Visa, Mastercard, and Maestro for IDR withdrawals up to 2,500,000 IDR per transaction.
Rooms near Malioboro and the Kraton fill quickly during Indonesian school holidays. If your dates are set, lock them in early.

The YIA Airport Train is the fastest and cheapest direct option. The line runs from the airport’s basement station to Tugu Station in central Yogyakarta in 40 minutes for 50,000 IDR per adult. Departures are roughly every 60 to 90 minutes from 5 am to 9 pm. Tickets are sold at the station counter or online via the KAI Access app.
DAMRI buses run on multiple routes from YIA, the most useful being the Malioboro and Maguwoharjo routes for 60,000 to 70,000 IDR with travel time of 90 minutes to 2 hours depending on traffic. Buses are air-conditioned with luggage holds.
Taxis cost 350,000 to 450,000 IDR for the 1 hour 15 minute drive into central Yogyakarta and operate from a managed counter outside arrivals. Grab and Gojek are also available but pickup zones at YIA are off-airport and can require a 10-minute walk to the designated waiting area. Hotel-arranged transfers are usually 380,000 to 450,000 IDR with a name-board greeter inside the terminal.
“The hotel arranged airport pickup for our 11 pm arrival and the driver was waiting with a name sign. Worth the small premium over a taxi after a long-haul flight from Madrid via Singapore.”

Adisutjipto International Airport (JOG), which is 8 km east of central Yogyakarta in Maguwoharjo, no longer handles jet aircraft. It still operates as a military base and a small civilian terminal for propeller flights. Most travelers will not use JOG, but the address sometimes still appears in older guides or third-party booking platforms.
If you book a flight that lists JOG as the destination, double-check before paying. Most legitimate commercial routes have moved to YIA. The exception is small ATR-class flights from Karimunjawa or some military hop-on slots, which remain at JOG.
JOG is 20 minutes by Grab from central Yogyakarta and 25,000 to 50,000 IDR. The terminal does still have ATMs and a small cafe but no significant amenities.
Getting Around Yogyakarta
Inside the city, Grab and Gojek are dominant. Both apps offer car (GrabCar, GoCar) and motorbike (GrabBike, GoRide) options. A typical 5 km motorbike ride costs 10,000 to 18,000 IDR and takes 10 to 15 minutes through traffic. The same trip by car runs 25,000 to 40,000 IDR and takes 20 to 30 minutes.
The Trans Jogja bus network runs 8 routes through the city and out to YIA Airport, Prambanan, and Borobudur connections. A single ride costs 4,000 IDR with electronic-card top-up. Buses are air-conditioned and reliable but slower than Grab. Useful for budget travel between Malioboro, the Kraton, and Prambanan terminal.
Becak (bicycle rickshaws) and andong (horse-drawn carts) operate around Malioboro and the Kraton mostly for tourists. Negotiate the fare before boarding. Expect 30,000 to 60,000 IDR for a short loop. Renting a scooter is also popular at 70,000 to 90,000 IDR per day, but international driving permits are required and traffic can be intense for first-time scooter riders.

Which airport should I fly into for Yogyakarta?
Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA) in Kulon Progo handles all jet flights since 2020. The older Adisutjipto (JOG) is now military and propeller only. Confirm the airport code on your booking is YIA.
How long is the drive from YIA to central Yogyakarta?
About 1 hour 15 minutes by car or 40 minutes on the YIA Airport Train. Traffic into Malioboro can add 15 to 25 minutes during evening rush hour.
Is Grab reliable in Yogyakarta?
Yes, both Grab and Gojek work well across the city and out to most tourist sites. Coverage thins beyond Borobudur or in the Gunung Kidul beaches, where pre-arranged drivers work better.
Can I use my credit card for a taxi from the airport?
Counter taxis at YIA accept cards. Grab accepts cards, GrabPay wallet, and cash. Always carry some IDR cash for small purchases and tips, since not all warungs accept cards.
Is it safe to rent a scooter as a foreigner?
Legally you need an International Driving Permit. Practically, traffic is intense and unfamiliar, so first-time scooter renters should consider Grab instead. Helmets are mandatory.
How much should I budget for daily transport in Yogyakarta?
For most travelers, 80,000 to 150,000 IDR per day covers Grab and Gojek rides between sights, restaurants, and the hotel. Add 350,000 IDR if you hire a car for a Borobudur or Prambanan day.
